Is My Cat Fat?

Overweight cats are more prone to early osteoarthritis, diabetes, and cancer to name a few. It is very important for your cat to maintain a healthy weight.

So…IS your cat fat? Does your cat have a pendulous belly? Does your cat have multiple chins? Does it look like your cats’ legs are getting shorter?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, your cat is fat and unhealthy.

Indoor cats can become bored with their environments and therefore, their physical activity decreases causing them to slowly gain weight.

Time to decrease food/treats and increase physical activity. Do not expect your cat to lose weight quickly. Cats should NEVER lose weight quickly as this can indicate a serious disease or can cause cats to develop a fatty liver and ultimately-liver failure. Cat weight loss is a slow and steady process.

Begin by slowly decreasing your cat’s food and treat intake. Your cat should be fed according to the guidelines on the back of the food bag/can BUT you will follow the guidelines for your cat’s ideal weight, not its current weight.

The following are toys that I have found effective for my fat cat in order to become more active and lose weight.

All toys can be found at the attached links below each picture.

Other toys that increase activity are teaser type toys in which a person dangles a toy and/or feather in front of the cat.

Always supervise your cat when they are playing with any toy.

Mental stimulation is also important for your cat. Try placing a bird feeder or two outside an easily accessible window.

Monitor your cat’s weight monthly to measure progress. If you do not have a scale at home, you can take your cat to your veterinarian’s office for a weight check or purchase a cat scale. The scale below is the scale I use for my cats.  Once your cat is at an ideal weight, you will notice a difference in activity and demeanor.
